While automation, AI, and digital transformation reshape today’s organizations, one enduring truth remains: people are—and always will be—your greatest asset.
The ‘P’ Playbook is a modern leadership guide built on five foundational pillars: People, Processes, Platforms, Programs, and Projects. In this first installment, we explore the most critical—and irreplaceable—‘P’: People.
The Frenemies of IT: Outsourcing and AI
In the early days of outsourcing, IT professionals feared job loss. Fast forward to today: 92% of the world’s top 2,000 companies leverage IT outsourcing as a core strategy of many CIOs. While true job loss and growth figures are difficult to calculate as job categories change, the IT sector continues to be the world’s growth engine.
Today, AI presents a similar challenge. McKinsey projects that AI and automation could displace 75 to 375 million jobs globally by 20302 , affecting not just back-office roles but also many jobs currently outsourced.
So, how should CIOs respond? I recommend taking the 3R Pill:
1. Reinvent: Moving beyond technical execution and become a strategic business partner.
2. Reframe: Refocusing your energy from doing commoditized outsourceable tasks to creative, value-generating activities.
3. Rise: Embrace the opportunity, using AI and other emerging technologies, as catalysts to deliver radically better, measurable business results.
These 3Rs are the building blocks of The ‘P’ Playbook.
10 Principles of People Management in the AI Era
1. People First
Great tech leaders don’t just build systems—they build great teams. They hire well, mentor constantly, and create opportunities for growth. The right team, when empowered, doesn't just follow strategy—they multiply it.
2. Pay for the Best
Hiring low-cost IT talent often leads to high-cost failures. Toptier professionals bring foresight, resilience, and speed. Invest wisely to reduce rework, accelerate delivery, and mitigate risk.
3. Practical Progress Beats Perfect
Perfectionism paralyzes progress. Great teams focus on shipping value, not endlessly iterating for the perfect solution. Generating the right momentum to deliver the right results is better than "Perfect" that never ships.
4. Place Business at the Apex
Any digitalization and transformation initiative must be business focused. Technology is only a tool—not the goal. Start with the strategic business destination in mind, and then choose the right people, processes, and platforms to get there. Have clear measurable OKRs (Objectives & Key Results) focused on business outcomes.
It’s not just about systems; it’s about leading meaningful transformation. Be the bridge between what the business needs and what technology can deliver. Most importantly, bring everyone along for the journey
5. Partner with the Business
The best IT organizations don’t just support the business—they co-create it. Build partnerships, not service desks. Align early, collaborate on solutions, and remain accountable to shared results.
6. Play Multiple Roles
Modern IT leaders must wear many hats:
A thoughtful listener—to understand business goals, fears, and pain points
A creative problem-solver—to design solutions that drive real progress
A trusted advisor—to guide executive decisions with clarity
A grounded leader—cool, calm, and collected, who keeps teams focused amidst constant change and chaos
Remember: It’s not just about systems—it’s about leading meaningful transformation. Be the bridge between what the business needs and what technology can deliver. Most importantly, bring everyone along for the journey.
7. Perception Is Reality
IT leaders must become data-informed storytellers. A good story backed by solid data shapes perception—and perception shapes adoption. Without data, most stories are just speculation.
8. Put Your Team Out There
The best systems aren’t built behind desks—they’re created on the shop floor, in the warehouse, and at the customer counter. Conduct Gemba walks; expose your team to real-world problems.
9. Pro-Business Technologist
Technocrats can be automated. Visionary, business-savvy leaders cannot. IT must bridge technology with bold business goals—understanding customers, markets, and risks. IT leaders must be fluent with the business dynamics, so they can connect the right technologies to fuel real business outcomes.
10. Put in the Work
As Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said: “Put in the work. Put in the hours. Take what’s ours.”
AI can write code—but it can’t build trust, lead people, or persuade a boardroom. Presence, persistence, and people-first leadership still win the day.
Closing Thoughts
Outsourcing taught us how to scale efficiently to optimize IT costs. Now, AI is challenging us to elevate—to rethink our roles, empower our teams, and lead with greater strategic intent.
The CIOs who will thrive in this era aren’t just technologists— they are human-centered leaders who inspire teams, architect smart processes, and align every digital initiative to real business value.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of The ‘P’ Playbook, where we explore Processes—the connective tissue between vision and execution.
